Locutionary act: an assertion, descriptive statement of act: referential sense, language of science, found in ritual but not important, can be proved right/wrong. Illocutionary act: performative, important: question of judgement, question of doing it properly or improperly. Perlocutionary act: used a lot in ritual: threats, persuasion, have of force. Try to conform to symbols/convention of your beliefs. Ritual is at the root of all social connection. Ritual accomplishes moral order rather than just belief. Regardless of symbolic content, it is actually going through the ritual that brings about change. Ritual as a form of action that is transformative. Meaning of acts/symbols can t be separated from the ritual. Argues that (pg. 448) all human rituals include signs specific to the society, church, etc. Through ritualization understand purpose of the ritual, as significant and able to transform. Signs are understood because people have been indoctrinated, it s a socially learned behaviour social being: deeply conventional.
