ANTB15 – Human Evo Lecture 1 note, September 17, 2012 - Introduction to evolutionary thinking - Evolution is the change in the gene frequency in a population over time - Can be broken down into micro (process), living populations, generations, examinations over a short period of time - Macro (product), fossils, 100’s of thousands of years - Macro perspective deals with speciation and how they evolve over time - A living population, a deme – the smallest breeding population (mating) - Reproductive period is 15-49, most likely to reproduce, some instances before and after - Menopause for older women, menses for younger women - Generation is 25-30 years, some hampering aspects - 4 mechanisms of process: natural selection (long process), gene flow, genetic drift, mutation, - Macro-evolutionary, hominids over time developed bipedal locomotion, brain capacity - Micro-evolutionary change brought, resistant to infectious diseases - Paradigm, a common belief in a scientific way of thinking, ie evolution vs creationism - Diversity is normative, anthroposcopic - Genotype is determined by the mating sequence th - Age of European exploration in the 17-18 century, a lot of variation - Creationism is that all people were created by god, 2 individuals - Mono-morphic (same) vs poly-morphic (many forms) - People began to realize people of different morphology, medieval paintings of variation - Variation was the production of imperfection - Humans were independent of nature, via creationism - Were supposed to be voided of animalistic tendencies - Ussher, reconstruction of the pedigrees (genealogical reconstruction) to calculate age - Many early approaches to explaining variation and change – the great chain via Aristotle and Lamark - Construc
