Segmentary Lineage System - Clan is the largest group of agnates to trace their decent from a common ancestor and between whom marriage is forbidden - Clans are highly segmented and all the subsets within a clan are known as lineages - An entire kinship system traces all kin relations through both parents - The clan are your agnates but everybody can also trace their relationships to their cognates (both mother and father) and alphines (the people you married into); the Nuer called these relationships Mar - The patrilineage is concerned only with agnatic kin (fathers lineage) - These clans remain relatively constant but the segments within it are highly dynamic - Pg. 198 EP wrote “Lineage values are thus essentially relative like tribal values and we suggest later that the processes of lineage segmentation and political segmentation are to some extent coordinate” *****KNOW HOW TO DISCUSS THIS STATEMENT FOR THE EXAM***** - In the real world it is difficult to tell lineages, clans, and tribal
