Grandfather lived through war and doesn’t like certain type of person music videos we watch/listen to location movies we watch  pictures in magazines; how are they chosen The lecture:  our relationship to the other  what are the stereotypes we use when we speak of the other  what power relationships  whose interests does it serve The debate around globalization  the great globalization debate is between those who are skeptical about the process the skeptics and those who accept it is a reality the gloablists Do we just focus on discontinuities? What about continuities? What are they (con’t)?—stereotypes and power Globalization is ideological -people use the word globalization differently, and to mean different things -how do Internationl instutituions enable these places by giving them money? --help local rice growers, so they can rely on selves instead of being a consumer --these connections benefit us, because we connect easily Federick Cooper writes about three styles of talking about globalization 1. Bankers boast 2. Social democrats lament 3. Dance of the flows and fragments The downsizing of governments and loosening of investment and trade regulations are important trends, but they reflect the force of pro-globalization arguments within institutions like the IMF more than an ongoing process --arguemnets within grps of what globalizations are Appadurai -work we perform -imagined worlds:; multiple Deterritorialization -Ppl, money, images, ideas flow among diff paths more than before -not found in one place or territory -these differences and the diverse spread of ppl/images/finance are more intense b/c of globalization -can’t find one easy line between a centre and periphery -can’t find these things in one place, but in several places instead -we can consume media about other ppl in other places much more easily Production fetishism -is about the hidden aspects of globalization -things that lack agency ex. This chair is beautiful, and cost 500$, and we see it different from me/ Marx says we are involved in creating the chair- we had work done on it- but bc of fetishism we imagine that they have magical properties and it is diff from us -illusion created by the transnational production loci, that masks transnational capital, transnational earning flows, global management, faraway workers, worker control etc. -obscure the relations of production Fetishism of the consumer -the consumer has been transformed through commodity flows told we have choice to choose what we want that we can go to space/sexy etc if we buy a certain product unevenness of power -the shift to a single worls system is also about a political imagination which does ntor eveal the contradictions, unevenness, and lumpiness of power and diff systems of production Orientalism – world to know -edward said used the term to describe a pervasive western tradition, both academic and artistic, of prejudiced outsider interpretations of the east, shaped by the attitudes of European imperialism cultural stereotypes -ideas of bounded cultures and backwardness still inform stereotypes representations of other less developed nations, as well as racial, religious and gendered others with/in them -ex.
