Monday, January 21 – Lec 3 – The politics of livelihood and the culture of politics -steven greggory’s intro and chap 1 -heavy jargon in lec 1 -space and power and politics -critics about globalization -livelyhood, and who is on the margins of a globalized world -people who are trying to survive on the margins of globalization -those who are excluded from this, but still involve themselves -registered work force -who these ppl are and why it’s important to know about their situation -policies that disable govt to help welfare of own citizens, allowing foreign capital to come in – IMF (direct capital flows and whose money can make a profit) -the documentary will focus on bolivia  The image: the picture or reflection that gets disseminated and distributed by technology. Through media/magazines  The imagined: imagined community – global community that is part of the distribution. We are part of a global world. People we have encountered are part of this world. Not just ethnic group, but the whole world. Durkheim: power of the collective in sharing/imagining something that is real but outside of them. How individuals have the ability to consciously create a world they live in. share something that is external to them. Imagined world we live is is created by us but is external. Has a life of it’s own. We participate in that creation  The imaginary: The tourist resorts that someone has been to. Who has been to an all inclusive resort? Beach resorts:  Water sports  Excess of food  Isolated spare  Artificial  Economic diffusions  Beach boys  Exploitation/natives  Safer  Access to these jobs b/c they have certain access to papers/ education and qualifications that many others don’t The Dominican Republic  Santo domingo- municipal  Neighbor by Haiti, formerly colonized by them  Crops: sugar, tobacco, - depending on market and sugar and buyers and the mediators of the market, dominated by US,  See palm trees, beaches, worst qualities come out at these resorts -eat as much, drink as much, do w/e you want  These are the pics you see b/f you buy your pics -they promise relaxations, holidays, things you wont get in normal environment -what do these same pics hide? *they hide the exploitation, how space is fixed in a certain way which only some people can get in, and some can get out. How space is political.- who is qualified to go there, job seclusions, hierarchy in jobs (for certain people- those with money to manage/build/work there etc) -what else is left out? *don’t see the whole spectrum, hide people. Don’t see the country, just the beach (the sun the sand) *own perspective on things, national identity, cultural way of being there Alberto  Tourism is not helping the country. The rih ppl want to keep it all for themselves  He is an illegal tourguide, they are very resourceful, b/c they work outside the resort  The ads are all shit* the devil is on the other side  The mirror: that is something nice, something beautiful, but something is missing, not right -the devil is trying to seduce you, have you live in a self indulgence world -the devil shows you what you want to see -the exploited side allows you to see what you want -disparity between what these spaces means between those that live there and those that vacation there -death: “you” in the mirror and what you are doing to these people -alberto says it: depends on how you interpret it -greggory: metaphor for all that is happening in domincan, there is a seductive view on the commodity and the things you see being advertised. You are seduced by it. The problem is, the other side, the people that are able to benefitted from the things you buy are those people with large amount of money etc. you are the one being taken advantaged of. You are being tricked and absorbed into these invented desired. What you don’t see is that YOU are being exploited. Devil behind the mirror  Metaphor used by one of gregory’s informants- alberto, an illegal tour guide- for what is happening in the Dominican repub  Gregory compared it to the dissonance between transnational capital promises and what it delivers  “nightmare” face of globalization -that there is the otherside of globalization – the devil behind the mirror  some ppl see it as a good thing, which benefits groups, focus on the flows and mvmts  what about the ppl who can’t leave? “globalization”  about the economic, social and economic processes of change  also about how working ppl and communities respond to and contest these developments (tourism, privatization, new tech) -not just think of globalization as a discourse/idea, but see how ppl respond and see it. -how they choose to view and understand it in their lives deterritorialization is exaggerated  idea that there is less fixaty where boundries and ideas are freer to move. Not enclosed in small space  too mch focus on mvmt, border crossings and how capital and culture are free from spatial constraints  less importance of place based or spatial politics -space does matter, and exaggeration on ppl talking about flows and freedoms  what about the diff and inequalities created within the borders of a country? -cosmopolitans – talk about ppl with money and are able to experience diff cultures of the world, we forget ppl that are limited to experience this nightmare face of globalizat
