ANTB22 LEC 8 MARCH 17 2011 PROSIMIANS UNIQUE LEMUR CHARATERISTICS Sexually monomorphic Cathemerality showing both diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns Cannot predict when they will be active, tends to be a lemur trait (also seen in owl monkey) SLIDE 2 Female dominance trait shown by SOME of the lemur species Targeted aggression females attack other females, even their close relatives REPRODUCTION IN LEMURS total hormonal control of mating chimps, or humans can have sex when preggers, lemurs cannot no non-conceptive matings, as in other primates (Capuchins can mate whenever, they can be non-ovulating) STRICT SEASONAL REPRODUCTION IN LEMURS For lemurs, reproduction is controlled by PHOTOPERIOD (# hrs exposed to daylight out of a 24 hr period) - start mating as daylight hours get shorter In North America, reproduction is 6 mo. out of phase with the timing of events in Madagascar www.notesolution.com
