The sweetness of home: class, culture and family life in sweden. Quality of life has become a popular concept and this is something which really concerns the home-maker. Most things can be marketed today, even feelings like homeliness. The concepts of home and family are powerful symbolic images and metaphors in western culture, but the way they have been used differs widely between classes, periods and social settings. This paper explores the gap between ideals and realities in home and family among swedes during the last hundred years. The late oscarian period of swedish history is the period when a bourgeois lifestyle emerged as a distinct and elaborated dominant culture in swedish society. The second part of the paper deals with the ways in which this ideal of domesticity became part of a dominant culture and worldview: the natural order of things. Public and private the victorian home as stage and shelter.
