Most diseases have several factors contributing to causation. The objective of epidemiology is to improve health. Diseases can be caused by genetics or an interaction between genetics and environmental factors (ex. 1850s: in 1854 over a span of a few weeks, 862 people living in london, uk died of cholera. There were two theories as to what caused the cholera outbreak. At this time period there was no germ theory so people didn"t know that illnesses were caused by microorganisms. In order to control disease they attempted to make the air smell better but that didn"t do much. The second theory was that proposed by john snow.
