Document Summary
The origins & chemical building blocks of life. 4. 5 billion years ago, earth was a hostile place: severe volcanic and tectonic(seismic) activity existed. Over time, some of earth"s heat radiated away and surface layers cooled and solidified into the rocks of the crust. Because of its size, earth"s gravitational pull was strong enough to hold an atmosphere around the planet. Atmosphere was derived partly from the original dust cloud and partly from gases released from planet"s interior as it cooled. Chemical and physical processes on early earth produced simple cells with the characteristics of living organisms. All life forms composed of macromolecules: nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates. Three major hypotheses: primordial soup, primordial atmosphere. Hydrogen (h2) carbon dioxide (co2) ammonia (nh3) Methane (ch4) - but virtually no oxygen (o2) rich in electrons created reducing atmosphere, which allows them to interact and form organic compounds.
