Document Summary
Cells are miniature factories hundreds of biochemical reactions that collectively accomplish the activities of life: growth, reproduction, movement. Cell migration, vesicle, external signalling though internal cascades: ability to respond to stimuli. Living organisms must be able to harness and utilize energy. Metabolism = total of all chemical reactions that occur in an organism. Product of one reaction is a reactant for the next reaction. Regulated by feedback reactions that act as control mechanisms. Metabolism manages the material and energy resources of the cell. Exhibits 2 types of reactions: anabolic reactions, energy is consumed, build complex molecules from simple molecules. Photosynthesis: catabolic reactions, energy is released, degradative reactions: complex molecules broken down into simpler molecules. Energy the capacity to do work (cause change) Falling rock, electricity (flow of electrons), photons of light. Potential energy energy of structure or position. Potential energy can be converted to kinetic energy. Thermodynamics the study of energy and its transformations.
