Document Summary

Cells are fundamental units of life- cell theory. Major type of lipid in cell membrane is phospholipids. Phospholipids have hydrophobic (fatty acid tail) and hydrophilic (head with glycerol, phosphate group and polar group) making them amphipathic. Arrangement is dependent on size of head group. If head is large and bulky with hydrophobic tail, comes in sphere called micelles. If head is small but 2 hydrophobic tails, they form bilayer with closed structure and inner space. Liposome happens when phospholipids are spontaneously formed by enclosed bilayers in tubes. Lipids associate with one another by vander walls forces (non-covalent interaction) between fatty acid tails. Because interactions are weak, membrane lipids are able to in plane of membrane. Individual fatty acids chains also flex or bend. As a result of membrane fluidity, and this flexibility, membranes are dynamic (forming an reforming during lifetime in cell)
