LEC 28 Mendel
November 12, 2015
→ Genetics at the time of Mendel
- 1800s → no one knew about DNA or chromosomes
- two theories :
→ The A to Z of genetic terminology
1) allele: alternative version of gene
2) character (trait): characteristic that is transmitted from generation to
generation in individual
3) cross: mating bw two individuals leading to fusion of gametes
4) diploid (2n): eukaryotic cell with two homologous sets of chromosomes
5) F1 gnereation (first filial generation): offspring of P(parental) generation
6) F2 generation : result of mating of F1 generation
7) Gamete: mature reproductive cell specialized for sexual fusion
8) Gene: factors (determines characteristic)
→ experiment 1→ monohybrid crosses (flowers)
P: purpleXwhite
F1: all pruple
F2: 705 purple and 224 white
→ experiment 2 (peas)
P: yellow peasXgreen peas
F1: all yellow
F2: 3 yellow, 1 green
***disappeared in F1, then came back in 3:1 ratio in F2
dominant→ phenotype that is expressed in F1 (expressed over the other one)
example: purple flower
recessive → phenotype not expressed in F1
example: white flower (protein is not there or does not work)
Phenotype→ what you see –literally
Genotype→ pair of alleles present in individual
Homozygous → two aleles of trait that are the SAME
- homozygous dominant → Y/Y
- homozygous recessive → y/y
Heterozygous → two alleles of trait that are different
→ Independent Assotrment
