Document Summary

Allows cell to control what"s coming in and out of the internal environment. Plasma membrane composed of phospholipid bilayer in which relative disperse membrane proteins could freely diffuse. What is true: plasma membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer. What"s not true: there are thousands of proteins in the membrane, they"re not disperse. Also that molecules are not free to diffuse in and out, it"s controlled. Molecules have a polar hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. Bc some of them have double bonds, they are unsaturated. How many double bonds determines the degree of unsaturated (mono/poly) Def: tendency of polar molecules like water to exclude hydrophobic molecules (non-polar molecules aggregate) Note: micelles are lipid molecules that arrange themselves in a spherical form in aqueous solutions, hydrophobic tails protected from water outside. If phospholipid bilayer didn"t allow molecules to diffuse, those two should have stayed separate on the 2 different poles of the cell.
