Document Summary
Migration is the predictable and seasonal movement of animals from where they were born (their natal location) to a distant and initially unfamiliar destination. They migrate to escape conditions that are stressful and sometimes it is a special requirement for unique breeding habits or offspring rearing habits. Migration is usually instinctive but it also requires learning. Piloting is using familiar landmarks to guide the way. Compass orientation involves moving in a particular compass direction based on the sun or earth"s magnetic field. Celestial navigation is when organisms migrate at night based on star positions. True navigation is when organisms combine compass orientation with a mental map and they recognize local cues from the environment like smell or landmarks. They can be acoustic (sound), chemical, electrical, tactile (touch), or visual. Organism behaviour ultimately maximizes reproductive fitness: survival, growth and maintenance, defense, mating (sexual selection, sexual conflict, mate choice, mates as limited resource, and territoriality, parental care.
