In general, functional assessment provides information about the relationship between the problem behaviour and its antecedents and consequences. It looks @ the causes of behaviour, function of behaviour, and different approaches. More specifically, functional analysis looks at how environmental events play a role in maintaining behaviour. Operant (6 subtypes positive and negative reinforcement for social, non-social, self- stimulation) Collect data to see if hypothesis is correct. Do functional analysis by directly testing the hypothesis. If treatment is successful, accept the causal analysis as confirmed. Psychologists and other professionals must follow guidelines (accountability) Professionals must get appropriate training and be up-to-date. Goals should be consistent with basic rights of a client. Therapist must be made aware of their own values and beliefs. Client must be an active participant in identifying target behaviours and goals. Use a treatment that causes the least harm and discomfort. Remove the escape function by continuing to place demands on the child until they stop screaming.
