Document Summary

Gasping is not a pathological breathing, it is considered to be the basic form of breathing we can exhibit. We can still breathe if we only have our medulla: gasping: often triggered by low oxygen or blood flow. The primary goal of the respiratory system is to get oxygen from the air into the blood, where is can be delivered to the tissues, and get rid of co2 - a metabolic waste product. Gases move whether they are in air or dissolved in solution in blood, according to partial pressure gradient. The atmosphere we are in now is comprised of the sum of the partial pressure of all of the gases that make up the atmosphere. If humidity is zero, water vapor needs to be taken into account. Partial pressures of various gasses can be found by multiplying the atmospheric pressure, by % that the gas occupies.
