Document Summary
From tree to seed: transport in plants, plant nutrition and soils, plant defense, plant life on the edge. Lecture 12 notes (plant life on the edge) Freshwater environment limiting factors: carbon dioxide , oxygen , light mainly found in surface of water and not below surface , nutrients , moving water that drags the plants. It shows 6 different diagrams. (from left to right) 1 is submerged plants. 4~5 are free roots and no root examples: submerged plants. Tissues bathed in water, little need for directed water transport: e. g water lily (have 2 cell of xylem) , nymphaea, non-woody land plant. ( developed xylem) No mechanical strengthening: buoyancy, water support because no xylem, so don"t need structure support, e. g river water crowfoot, submerged plants have narrow dissected leaves. Mainly use veins: central vascular bundle (stem) where veins are located at centre to withstand water current, e. g potamogenton pectinatus , aponogeton madagascariensis, myiophyllum aquaticum.
