Document Summary
Global biodiversity patterns: species diversity incr"s as you move from poles to tropics (latitudinal gradient) E. g. , plant species, bird species and amphibian species. There are few mammal species near the poles, mostly rodents and their carnivore predators, plus seals and whales in the sea. Tropical regions have a great diversity of many types of mammals, rep"ng from all the major groups (anteaters to apes) There are also reef fish biodiversity in the indian and pacific oceans [oceanic species richness: island species diversity determined by island"s size and remoteness (island biogeography theory) mcarthur and wilson. Distribution of species on islands is related to the balance b/w colonization and extinction. Theory later was expanded to include mainland metapopulation theory (fragmented habitats on mainland act like islands) # of species present on an island found by # of immigrating from mainland or other islands and # going extinct.
