Metabolism of glucose begins with glycolysis in which glucose is converted to pyruvate. Pyruvate is then oxidized to produce acetyl-coa which then enters the krebs (citric acid) cycle. Within the krebs cycle, pyruvate is converted into a series of intermediate compounds with the result being the production of 2 atp molecules, fadh molecules and nadh molecules. Fadh and nadh then enter the electron transport chain leading to the further production of atp. The important point for this course is that the metabolism of glucose involves the consumption of oxygen and the production of carbon dioxide (here we are focusing on aerobic respiration) Other fuel sources such as proteins and lipids are also metabolized with the resulting consumption of oxygen is consumed and the production of carbon dioxide. Oxygen consumption and co2 production are frequently used as measures of metabolic rate (i. e. , the rate of energy consumption) An animal ingests food which is a form of chemical energy.
