Document Summary

Bioa02 module 1 lec 2 tree of life. Lycophyte"s life cycle is pretty much identical to that of the ferns. Lycophytes are thought to be the plants which conquered land because for the first time, the plants have cuticles. Lycophytes also the first to have stomata = openings in cuticle for gas exchange (carbon goes in, oxgen gets out) made up to two guardian cells. Lycophytes also the first to have vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) though they are primitive. 3 main groups of lycophytes: clubmosses, quillworts, spikemosses. Originated in the early carboniferous period (80 million years after the lycophytes) 3 main groups of ferns: whisk ferns, horsetails, true ferns. Approximately 12000 species of ferns(99% are true ferns) 75% of true fern species grow in the tropics. Leaves of ferns = fronds and mature fronds develop sori in the lower leaves. Sori = organs where ferns produces spores for reproduction.
