Document Summary

Bioa02 module 2 lec 14: the nervous systems. Early experiments on nervous systems was done on squids and worms. There are nerves (sensors) in the external environment and internal environement. ; internal environment blood pressure, co2 levels, ph levels etc. Begin the whole process begins with a sensing systems (detects stimuli) In all of these systems there are molecules on the cell membrane (i. e. receptor protein or transducer) that senses the stimulus. This causes a signal transduction pathway to be activated which leads to intercellular changes or opens ion channels to move ions in and out of cells occurs in most nerves (insert slide 2 here) Depolarization = increase in membrane potential the electrical charge across a cell membrane. Cell is negative on the inside with relation to the outside. Depolarization refers to the electrical charge moving in the positive direction. The central nervous system is the major integrative system.
