How is Genetic Variation Maintained within Populations
Color due to carotenoids cannot be produced, they are extracted from the
environment through eating or through the skin.
oCarotenoids are used for the immune system
oHigh levels of carotenoids display a healthy individual
Maintenance of Genetic Variation
1.Neutral Mutation:
Successful individuals are the ones that pass on their genes the
best
Alleles that do not affect fitness is a neutral allele
2.Sexual Recombination
Combining different genes in many different sequences
Involves crossing over and different assortments of different
genes\
Ex: offspring is varied between two mates
Produces the genetic variety that increases evolutionary potential
Disadvantages:
Recombination can break up adaptive combinations of
genes
Dividing offspring into genders reduces overall reproductive
rate
Advantages:
Possible for mutation not the be passed onto offspring due
to recombination
