Document Summary

Bacteria- 3600 million years ago (eoarchean era) Do not precisely know when they evolved- but know after algae. Do not have a cuticle (vascular plants have one) Loss and uptake of water along whole surface. They have unspecialized cells that fill the space, whereas vascular plants have cells that contain bundles made of xylem (water conducting) and phloem (sugar conducting) They are typically small because there is no vascular system back bone to help them stay up. Also because the transportation of water and sugar is not efficient enough for them to receive the needed nutrients: liverworts, mosses, hornworts. Spermatozoid via flagella [water dependant] propelled over short distances. Spores via wind [wind dependant]- propelled over long distance. 3 groups: clubmosses (400 species, quillworts (150 species, spikemosses (700 species) Early carboniferous era "coal bearing: whisk ferns (2 species, horsetails (15 species, true ferns (12,000 species) Prothallium- no cuticle and therefore, prone to loosing water and dying if sun hits it.
