Document Summary

Egg develops inside the megametophyte within the spore wall and inside the megasporangial tissue (archegonium) = ovule. Once the ovule is fertilized, it will become a seed. The male gametophyte called the pollen grain is very small, only a few cells and covered with protective layer called exine . When it lands on the female tissue, it germinates to produce a pollen tube that"s grown through female tissue carrying the nonmotile sperm to the egg. Seed structure forms when the ovule matures after sperm fertilization through pollination. Encases in a seed, the embryo is protected and can be transported far from its parent plant. In canada, gymnosperms make up most of the boreal forests that cover about one-third of the country"s landmass. Modern gymnosperms are all woody species: conifers (coniferophyta) Lecture #12: cycads (cycadophyta, ginkgoes (ginkgophyta, gnetophytes (gnetophyta) Most are evergreen (shed some but not all leaves each year)
