LEC 35 Tree of Life: Viruses & Prions
Nov 27, 2015
• viruses need hosts to survive
• cannot survive on their own
→ What is a virus
- non-living
- virus particle (virion) nucleic acid + protein coat to protect it (capsid)
- reproduce by entering host cell and make new particles of same kind
→ Viral Structure
• helical viruses
• polyhedral viruses
- have spike proteins that are important in targeting the protein to specific cell
type
• enveloped viruses
• complex polyhedral viruses
- polyhedral head + complex tail
- genome in head, injected into host cell through sheath
→ E.Coli’s Bacteriophages
* virulent bacteriophages
* temperate bacteriophages
* t- even bacteriophages
