How does a Cell Function?
Genes can make proteins. Proteins types & functions:
o Enzymes, make up other macromolecules, major structural component, receptors
channels, hormones and growth factors, signalling components, and gene
activators/transcription factors.
o There are 200 specialized cells staying in tissues after development
Early History Microscopy
Robert Hooke (1665)
o He came up with the “cell” – examining cork
Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1665-1675)
o “animicules” – looking at pond water organisms
Matthias Schleiden, botanist (1838)/ Theodor Schwann, zoologist (1839), Rudolf
Virchow (1855) => came up w/ cell theory
