Document Summary

Atoms : smallest units of an element. Neutral atom: equal numbers of protons and electrons. Can be caused because some atoms are so strongly electronegative that they capture electrons from other atoms during chemical reaction. Molecule: two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. H2o ( 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom) Found as large deposits under sea floor. Covalent: electron pairs shared b/w atoms to form molecules. Atoms most stable when their outermost electron shells (valence shell) are full. # of covalent bonds formed by an atom depends on # of electrons needed to fill valence shell. Atoms can share more than 1 pair of electrons. Unequal sharing of electrons (asymmetric charge distribution) One atom has partial positive and other has partial negative charge. Atom with > attractive force = electronegative atom: nonpolar mol. Lack electronegative atoms (electronegativity is balanced b/w atoms) Example: molecules only made up of c and h.
