Document Summary

Receptor recognize and bind to messenger molecules (=ligands) Hormone endocrine messengers, act on target cells located st distant sites in the body. Endocrine gland - messenger molecules reach their tar- get cells via passage through the bloodstream. Autocrine cell that is producing the messenger expresses receptors on its surface that can respond to that messenger: cells releasing the message will stimulate (or inhibit) themselves. Cellular communication and signal transduction can take place in 3 basic communication strategies to respond to extracellular signaling: autocrine. Particular cell secrets some type of signaling molecule that actually feedback to itself that cell has a receptor for that molecule and can influence its activity: paracrine. Particular cell generates an extracellular signal it might not be regulating itself or it could be of course but its regulating its neighbors, that is its neighbors have receptors for that particular signaling molecule.
