If cell capable of iniiaing response it has to have receptor at top. This diagram shows 2 separate types of signalling pathways. On let hand side of igure, the receptor itself interacts with the molecule referred to an efector and that efector then begins to transduce the signal from the cell surface to a variety of pathway components. Can have many steps in that pathway, all leading to acivaing and someimes inacivaing proteins that depending on the signal can do something to cause a wide variety of cellular processes including cell death. Provides post translaional switch to turn on or of acivity of a paricular protein, regulates it acivity, and whatever goes on downstream from there will be afected. Suppose protein kinase goes on and acivated immediately when synthesized. Its inacive unil protein kinase 1 acts on it, phosphorylates it, then it becomes acive and looks for its target.
