Document Summary

Rna can act as an enzyme ribozyme. There are conserved sequences at the 3" splice junction and at the 5" splice junction. The 3" splice site can be further defined by a variable length of polypyrimidines, called the polypyrimidine tract (which has a lot of pyrimidines c/t) There is also a branch point sequence which contains an a" that will be needed for the first step of splicing. If those rna molecules are translated, a normal protein can be produced: a little bit of extra coding material may make an aberrant protein (with extra amino acids); can completely change the structure or function of the molecule. Self-splice : ribozyme: an rna that has enzymatic activity. Self-splicing events exist in a variety of organisms. Group i introns: found in nuclear rna of lower eukaryotes, some organelles: form elaborate, 3d structures due to intra-strand base-pairing (complementarity within their nucleotide sequences)
