Document Summary

Nerve impulse transmission overview: transmission of nerve impulses within neurons is by electrical conduction and by contrast, transmission of nerve impulses between 2 neurons is by chemical transmission. In some cases you can also transmit electrical signals between neurons. Synapses types: chemical synapse, more common than electrical, there is the presence of synaptic vesicles. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that are going to stimulate the next neuron. They are always synthesized in advance and stored within vesicles in the axon terminal. The neurotransmitters will diffuse across synaptic cleft and bind onto a neurotransmitter receptor on the postsynaptic cell. This will cause the membrane permeability of the postsynaptic cell to change for one or more different types of ions. Invertebrates and vertebrates independently evolved their gap junctions b/c they are both built out of different proteins: 6 connexins or 6 innexins form a hemi-channel (half-channel).
