Document Summary
Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical rxns occurring in a living organism. There are 1000s of metabolic rxns taking place in animals (the terms on map not significant in this course) Physiologists, interested in thinking about metabolism in terms of how energy flows through animals. One of the 7 fundamental characteristics of animals. Chemoheterotrophic: carbon through the consumption of organic molecules. Most of the organic molecules that the animals consume (sugars, proteins, fats) are generally too large to be easily be absorbed -- . Helps to break down molecules into smaller bits for easy absorption. Some of the organic chemicals absorbed across the wall of the gut & enter the bloodstream, from which it distributes to various cells. Not all of the ingested chemical energy gets absorbed b/c. Some molecules are resistant to being broken down & digested. Passing too quickly through the gut (ex. diarrhea) & minimizes time available for absorption.
