BIOB50H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Primary Succession, Evapotranspiration, Lichen
Document Summary
Disturbance is anything that changes the fundamental properties of the environment. There are different types of intensities of disturbances which affect the successional responses. Little successional change akin to trees falling, primary succession is akin to mt helen erupting. Outcomes of disturbance edges from disturbances which have a strong impacts. These impacts bleed into nearby communities: impacts in terms of distance from the edge. Increased resources: you have hard, water, nutrients, light. Allogenic processes: change is externally driven. (climate change, drought, flood, meteor strike!) Autogenic processes: change is internally driven by impacts from members of the ecosystem or their interactions (soil enrichment, facilitation, competition, species- driven disturbance. ) Succession mirrors the development of an individual organism, with the climax community being the mature superorganism. Species interact in mutually beneficial, even altruistic ways to promote the development of the superorganism in a directed fashion.
