BIOC32H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Electrical Synapse, Axon Terminal, Calcium Atpase
Document Summary
Pre/post synaptic neuron carrying signal to/from neurons respectively. There are different types of axons as well as where they form synapses. Axosomatic (axon terminus to cell body or soma) Convergent = many coming to one (which integrates) Vast majority of synapses in humans are of the chemical type, most abundant (turn electrical signal coming from the pre synaptic membrane to a chemical signal, which is then going to the post synaptic neuron) Synaptic vesicles packed full of neutransmitters (i. e. chemical signal) Electrical potential triggers release of neurotransmitters from vesicles, which bind to receptors on post synaptic membrane - opening of ion channels and thus another ap is generated. Vesicles only present on pre and receptors only present on post. Electrical synapses play an important role during the early development of the nervous system (conduct electrical signals directly from one neuron to another) Direct signal via gap junctions - channels that allow for direct cytoplasmic connection b. w one cell to another.
