BIOC32H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Axon Hillock, Alpha Helix, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Receiving electrical signals (via dendrites or cell body membrane from other cells or chemical mediators) Integrating information to make decisions via axon hillock. Conduction of signal and speed of signal via axon. Transmit/broadcast signal to others via axon terminal (neurons, cells, etc. ) A positive outside charge is localized along the extracellular membrane (same for negative inside charge) Last lecture we focused on the reception side, where graded potentials that occur predominantly in dendrites/cell bodies that receive signals from other neurons or even in free floating chemicals. This eventually leads to the neuron sending the signal or not. Now we look at the actual ap that the axon generates as its signal. We start at the axon hillock @ rest (-70mv)=rmp. Na gated channels open and na goes into the cell and moves along membranes within cell. This brings rmp up to tp via graded potentials. Absolute refractory period (only occurs as a result of axon hillock being brought to tp)
