There were time periods of mammals that had different faunas from what is seen today. Adaptive radiation: the rapid evolutionary radiation of a lineage into a variety of different adaptive forms: allows species to adaptively diverge into ecologically niches, this is opposed to simple radiation. Pre k/t view: mostly supported by molecular phylogenies these suggest that most orders of mammals predate the k/t boundary by tens of millions of years or more. It combined previous published molecular phylogenies for mammals to create a giant super tree containing most mammal species; creating a large phylogeny with all the mammals alive today. They dated the tree by forcing the earlies split within mammals to have a date of 166. 2. Mya based on the oldest fossil that is thought to belong to the crown group of mammals: crown group: most recent common ancestor to all the mammals living today.
