Thursday, September, 13 , 2012 BIOA01- Biology and the Tree of Life: Lecture 02 Overview:  What is Biology?  What is Life?  How is ALL life on earth related?  What are the unifying principles of life?  What is meant by “Tree of Life?” What is Biology?  Biology is the scientific study of life What is Life?  Life can be described as alive vs. non-alive  E.g. plants, humans, vs. desk, chair, virus  Life can be defined by certain properties The emergent properties of life: 1. Consist of organized cells 2. Contain heritable genetic information for reproduction 3. Show growth and development (size and number of cells) 4. Respond to external stimuli (changes to environment in cells (internal) and plants (eternal) 5. Exhibit homeostasis (regulation of internal with external environment ) 6. Harness(external) and utilize energy to do work, and maintains order and homeostasis 7. Adapt to environmental change with evolution through natural selection (gives rise to tree of life) David Atenburg Video: How is ALL life on earth related? 1. The Theory of Evolution by natural selection:  All species past and present can trace it back to a single common ancestry 2. The cell theory:  Cells are basic unit of life  All organisms are composed of cells  All cells come from pre-existing cells ** All life on earth is related. Unity and Diversity of life through Evolution** Diversity and Unity of Life through Evolution: 1. Diversity of Life- Evolution  Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution of natural selection is a unifying framework  All organisms c
