From seed to tree 7-8. From tree to seed 9. Transport in plants 10. Plant nutrition and soils 11. Plant defense 12. Plant life on the edge. Lecture 5 notes (From seed to tree) A) Seed to germination i. Seed dispersal parent-offspring competition for space ingenious adaptations: wind, water, ant, mammal, internal, hitchhiking, external hitchiking:  Explosive self dispersal (e.g Jewelweed-touch me not)  Hairs-e.g common in milkweed (Asclepias xyriaca), Virgin’s bower (Clematis virginiana)  Parachute-e.g. dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), Goat’s beard (Tragopogon protensis)  Winged-e.g. sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Manitoba maple (A.negundo), Norway maple (Acer platanoides).  Water dispersal- e.g seabean, coconut  External hitchhiker-e.g. beggar’s tick, cleavers, tick trefoil, Burdock (Arctium minus)  Internal hitchiking-e.g. blackberry, cherry, cohosh, pin cherry, solomon’s seal, dollseyes, CA mayflower (through color luring).  Gravity disperal-by mammals. E.g red oak (Quercus rubra).  Ant disperal o Elaiosomes(caruncle): rich in lipids and proteins attached to seed for symbiotic relationiship. The plant can disperse seed, ant achieves food. o E.g white trillium, red trilliu, bloodroof, trout lily. Dispersal distance from farthest to closest distance:  Water>internal hitchhike>external>wind>mammal>external>ant>ex
