Document Summary

Bioa11 lecture 2 chemistry within cells. Module 1: cell la vie (lecture 2 based on: chapter 2) Characteristics of living organisms: common set of biological molecules, composed of cells, growth (& evolution, movement, reproduction, response to external environmental stimuli, metabolism. Involves chemical processes within the cells, including the breakdown of substances to produce energy, the synthesis of substances necessary for life and the excretion of waste generated by these processes: maintain homeostasis. The maintenance of a constant internal environment despite a constantly changing external environment. Composed of atoms that cannot be broken down by normal physical means (ex: boiling) Atoms: the smallest units of an element composed of subatomic particles called protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons: have a positive electric charge and give the element its atomic number. Electrons: the negatively charged electrons found outside the nucleus in an electron cloud . Electrons are attracted to the positively charged nucleus. Protons and neutrons are found within the nucleus.
