Document Summary

Plasma membrane = cell membrane, plasma lema. Unsaturated hydrocarbon tails =kinky, not that solid, things can sneak through. Proteins : catalyze reactions, transport processes, two types of proteins : Peripheral : on 1 side of the membrane (usually on inside), help anchor membrane to cytoskeleton. Integral : goes completely across the membrane, 1 section in cell and out of cell. Carbohydrates : glycoprotein and glycolipids : signal cells. Barriers are semi permeable : accept easily : hydrophobic non polar molecules , small molecules, doesn"t accept easily : hydrophilic polar molecules, ions, large molecules (sugars) Anabolic reaction (eg. photosynthesis) : synthetic reactions, small molecules (co2 and water) are converted using light energy into large molecules such as carbohydrates, energy is required and stored into the chemical bonds. Catabolic reaction : degradative reactions, complex molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Therefore the energy from these broken bonds can be used to make atp or to do some sort of work.
