This figure shows a chromosome region which has polymorphisms. This means that some individuals will have an "a" at a certain position, while other people may have a "c" (or other base). It is the sum of all snps (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that make each of us unique individuals (we each have several million snps). With respect to our responses to some drugs for example, consider snps within a membrane protein or enzyme- encoding gene that are involved in the metabolism or response to the drug. For some people, certain snps might mean that their protein does not bind or transport the drug, or metabolizes it poorly. "haplotype" and how every drug worked (we don"t! ), we might be able to predict side effects and even the potential for lethal effects. In the not too distant future, this branch of medicine, called personalized genomics, will be a reality.
