Description
Concluding points on BIOC19 lecture on Cancer1 30 years ago researchers talked about finding a universal cure for cancer that is finding the major bullet that would cure all cancers2 Nobody talks about finding a universal cure for cancer anymore 3 We now known that cancer is a complex group of diseases characterized by cells exhibiting uncontrolled cell division but triggered by various inducing agents that impact a range of genes4 To understand what goes wrong in cancer that is to understand the molecular roots of cancer we need to advance our understanding of the molecular biology of normal cells in order to what goes wrong in cancer cells at the molecular level5 That is what researchers in the field of Developmental Biology are doing studying the cellular and molecular biology of normal cells during animal development and that forms the basis of understanding what goes wrong when normal cells transform to cancer cells exhibiting uncontrolled cell division and abnormal cell recognition properties that lead to invading normal cell populations6 Researchers are finding new avenues to crack the genetic code of cancer by understanding how normal cell operate at the cellular and molecular level7 A big challenge is moving scientific discoveries in the laboratory on the cellular and molecular biology of cancer into clinical treatments for cancer patients8 This is termed translational research Converting new discoveries in the laboratory into improved clinical treatments for cancer patients9 Immunotherapy is an example of
