BIOD35H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Fluid Balance, Body Fluid, Exercise Intensity

68 views4 pages

Document Summary

Maintenance of fluid balance is a major concern for athletes competing in endurance events. Main function of water during exercise is to keep body temperature in an optimal state: sweat loss is the largest source of water and electrolyte loss during exercise. We have mechanism in place that prevent an excessive rise in core temperature. Want a bigger gradient between the core body temperature and the skin temperature: sweating is the internal air conditioning system. The cost of sweating is high, as we are losing water. Exercise imposes an added challenge to the thermoregulatory system: as exercise intensity and duration increases, metabolic heat production also increases. The sweat threshold is variable between people. Maintenance of fluid balance is a major concern for athletes competing in endurance events: high rate of metabolic heat production, high sweat rates, inadequate fluid intake. All three combined can result in substantial body fluid deficit, which can result in early fatigue.
