CHMB41H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lewis Structure, Metastability, Molecular Orbital Theory
Document Summary
Valence bond theory - head on bonding of s orbitals which result in stigma bonds, or in case of p bond we had side by side p orbitals and this was valence bond theory. Molecular orbital theory - head on bonding of s orbitals which can result in stigma bond/ stigma star antibond/side by side p orbital bond to give pi bond/pi start antibond. Methane - simplest carbon molecule, because of 4 electron groups it has a tetrahedral electron group geometry and tetrahedral molecular shape. Now use this bonding to be able to describe/explain that shape and see if that works. 1st we have carbon in group 4 of periodic table, so it has 4 valence electrons, in its valence shale. Carbon has a 2s and 3 2p atomic orbitals, If we draw out electron configuration for carbon we will have 2 electrons in.
