Municipal refers to formal, legal institution: defined by provinces by legal energies, deal with range of local issue, defined by distinct geographic boundaries, governed by elected council, granted taxing power. Some cities are granted with more power than others. According to one of the strongest authorities we have mixed results about intergovernmental relations. What happens when provinces amalgamate different cities/create different levels of government? o. Keep this in mind as we go through. We have a lot of municipal governments and a lot of variations (purpose of chart) We have many more municipal governments in rural or town ships (aka much smaller units of geographical areas) Thousands of other institutions that operate as part of a local government in canada. For a nation of only 33 million roughly, we have a lot of institutions (increased complexity here as well)
