The city was founded along the tiber river located on the italian peninsula in the center of the mediterranean sea. Location by the water eventually helps rome control the mediterranean. The site of rome was chosen for its fertile soil and strategic location. There were two main populaces on the peninsula: The etruscans (modern day tuscany, south of the po valley).
