Theme: Mass media and new technologies: Affirming or
challenging the status quo?
Critical media awareness is crucial for the work of considering
questions of race, class and gender not only as teachers but also with
our students. How should the teacher decide what is or isn’t an
appropriate topic of discussion? Is the teacher’s comfort a factor? If
so, how? Can technology change how learning takes place among
differently privileged or marginalized groups? How can we use
technology in ways that go beyond the “electronic textbook” to
consider ICT as a means for learning critical thinking and analytical
