CTEC01_Jan30 Another thought on speaking… From Sri Sathya Sai Baba (Indian mystic and guru, 1926-2011) “Before you speak, think – Is it necessary? Is it true? Is it kind? Will it hurt anyone? Will it improve on the silence?” ROSE reading Depth psychology What else is going on?  Beneath the surface  Behind the scenes Depth Psychology  “the study of that which is not accessible to direct observation” (Rose, p.18)  what doe this include? o Reading between the lines, you can sense that there was something else going on than what it actually is  Why does it matter? A few key concepts  Consciousness: what we are currently thinking of, everything we are aware of  Unconscious: things that we don’t really or can’t think about o The biggest part of our minds, we don’t have access to o Instincts, desires, wishes, memories that are difficult (too difficult that you don’t refuse to think about it) o Unconscious can hold attitudes that we don’t know  Ex. “I don’t like that guy, but I don’t know why”  Behaviour as symptom: things we do that we don’t know why until we really think about it o Ex. banging mike and sharon’s heads together  Causes vs. Goals (telos): what is the cause of hitting “mike and sharon’s head together?” o jealousy  Repression: When someone experience something traumatic enough, that their conscious can’t handle, their mind will push it to the side to the unconsciousness so they don’t think about it o 4 general situation
