Ecosystem concept: is how we ask scienti cally meaningful questions. Think of the rainforest in the sense of ecology: tropical, they are really tall, humid, moisture, lust trees, productive systems, diversity. The amazon is being fertilized but the remains of ancient sh from africa (phosphorus dust) So what lessons should we derive from the notion that the most productive systems on the planet tropical are dependant upon the least productive systems. Rst the idea that we could"t ever see tho relationship unless we see the planet as a whole. Biomass: organic material that makes up living organisms autotrophs: an organism that produces complex organic compounds from sunlight and inorganic molecules. Gross primary production (gpp): overal conversion of solar energy into chemical energy by autotrophs. Photosynthesis occurs in the presence of light and chlorophyll. Respiration involves the use of accumulated carbon to produce needed energy.
