Continental drift and plate tectonics are two different things. Continental drift is the original suggestion that continents move. Geophysics to be able to map generally what"s underneath the ocean and underground by using electromagnetic sound waves (allows us to measure depth and the structure underneath). They learnt the earth"s surface was broken down into a number of plates. Plates are the ones that are moving ( Plate tectonics which as a result moves the continents along too (late 60s, tuzo wilson). Alfred wegner realized you could fit south america in between europe and africa. Wegner proposed pangea, but this theory was ignored. He looked at rock types from each continent that were the same age. Climate belts: all the rocks that require the same climate were around one area. ** 65 million years ago eruope was still joined with north america. Striation: when the thick ice sheets are flowing, they make deep scratch the bottom of the sub-surface/bed.
